The teaching vessel “Sagres”, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary in the service of the Portuguese Navy, will be in Portimão from 21st to 23rd September and invites all interested parties to embark on a free entry visit, with the support of the Portimão City Council .

Built in the shipyards of Blohm & Voss, in Hamburg, in 1937, it received the name “Albert Leo Schlageter”, entering the service of the Brazilian Navy in 1948, which renamed it “Guanabara”.

In 1961, it was acquired by Portugal with the objective of replacing the old ship “Sagres”, which was no longer in a position to ensure the continuity of the instructional trips, inheriting from it all the symbols, including its own name.

It first raised the Portuguese flag on February 8, 1962 and has since provided training for future Navy officers, complementing the technical and academic components taught at the Escola Naval.

In these roles, he made more than 150 voyages, across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, North, Caribbean, Japan, China, Mediterranean, Arabian, Baltic, Red and Yellow seas.

In half a century in the service of the Navy, he has made three trips around the world, with 385 visits to ports and around 600 miles sailed, and is known as a traveling ambassador of Portugal.

Schools in the region will be invited to discover the particularities of this ship on the afternoon of September 21st, with “Sagres” being open to the rest of the public at the following time: 21st – 13:30 / 19:00; 20:00 pm / 23:00 pm; 22nd – 10:00 am / 12:00 pm; 13:30 pm / 19:00 pm; 20:00 pm / 23:00 pm; 23rd – 10:00 am / 12:00 pm.
