Motion of censure against Macário Correia rejected by AM de Faro

The motion to censure the mayor of Faro Macário Correia, presented by the Left Block, was unsuccessful last night at the Municipal Assembly, with 15 votes against, seven in favor and eight abstentions.

The censure motion, subject to secret voting, was rejected by a majority, despite the fact that the PSD/CDS/MPT coalition, through which Macário was elected, had a minority in the Municipal Assembly: 14 members against 19 of the four opposition parties (PS, CDU, BE and CFC).

If the censure motion had been passed, it would have no practical effect, as it would not entail the resignation of the mayor.

The motion presented by the blocistas reproached “president Macário Correia for not having suspended his mandate, as a result of the ruling of the Supreme Administrative Court”.

The Left Block considered that «the seriousness of the facts in judgment, with all the respect that will always deserve the final decision, would deserve on the part of the President of the City Council of Faro the voluntary suspension of the respective mandate until the Constitutional Court dictates its final decision. For all that has been alleged so far, for the sake of the image and action of the Municipality of Faro and respect for the citizens who made their choice in ignorance of the facts that are now proven and which are not contested by the defendant, this would be the transparent and democratic behavior required».
