The Institute of Portuguese Democracy (IDP) Algarve argues that "in the interest of the local economic fabric", the Municipality of Portimão should use "QREN/JESSICA funds to carry out a good and useful recovery of the historic center and adjacent streets" for there install stores affected by the fire that destroyed Retail Park a week ago.

«The brands in question can serve as anchors if they are located between Portimão and Rocha, or near the Train Station», defends the IDP Algarve.

However, "if they are relocated (definitely) on land close to the CHBA Hospital, they will only perpetuate the diversion of the Portimonian economy to that peripheral location."

The IDP Algarve referred to the possibility that companies would settle in the fairgrounds of Portimão, which already has «infrastructure and parking».

But this hypothesis, for IDP-Algarve, «continues not to create anchors that stimulate and revitalize the historic center of the city of Portimão and the life of the people of Portimão».

IDP-Algarve considers that the fire that destroyed the Retail Park in Portimão leaves another 300 people at risk of losing their jobs in the Algarve municipality with the highest number of unemployed, due to the loss of jobs or the difficulties of their relocation.

In relation to workers who may eventually become unemployed, despite the guarantees already given by the companies, the priority should be the defense of jobs and in this sense, the IDP calls on “the Southern Delegation of the Bar Association to create, in Portimão, a a network of lawyers, on a voluntary basis, to provide legal support for the targeted workers; the social responsibility of brands and mayors; so that future installations take into account the sustainability of local businesses; the importance of the ongoing investigation, without prejudice to any liability, as this investigation is important not so much for the result but because it urges that investigations in Portugal be carried out without loose parts, so that future damages do not arise for workers who remain working in the respective brands'.

The IDP also adds that it is concerned about "the possible usurpation of the Labor Law and in this regard, the call for social and civic responsibility of all those who are committed to running society is reiterated - an appeal that extends to voters and taxpayers ».
