"Motion

GREETING TO THE PEOPLE IN FIGHT AND FOR THE DISMISSAL OF THE GOVERNMENT

The current government assumed, since taking office, the role of foreman of the troika IMF – ECB – EU and went even further in the austerity measures than foreseen in the memorandum signed by the PS, PSD and CDS, in May 2011. The most flagrant example of this attitude of revenge against its own people, who, contrary to what they claim, never lived above the possibilities, is the theft of holiday and Christmas allowances in 2012 from civil servants, condemned by the Constitutional Court itself.

As was to be expected, the results of the austerity policies were the economic recession, the fall in investment and the increase in the number of bankruptcies, an uncontrolled unemployment that already exceeds 16%, the spread of poverty and social exclusion. Tolls on Via do Infante are bringing disgrace to many families and killing the economic and social development of the Algarve. And the debt, instead of decreasing, is growing, as a result of usury interest and the inevitable fall in tax revenues.

But, instead of giving way, those responsible for the economic and social disaster are responding to the crisis, aggravated by austerity, with even more austerity. In disregard of the Constitutional Court decision, the government decided to extend the theft of public sector wages and subsidies to all workers. During the last inspection of the troika, the government announced a 7% increase in the TSU on wages and a decrease of more than 4% for capital, supposedly to fight unemployment – which was soon denied by the employers' associations themselves.

The cup overflowed on 15th September, in the demonstrations that brought to the streets more than a million Portuguese under the motto "Fuck the troika, we want our lives!" On this day, Portimão also made history, manifesting in this city about 3 people from Portimão and other citizens from neighboring towns. In all these cities, spontaneously echoed the clamor for the resignation of the government, and it was verified that austerity is not just a mistake, but a choice of life and an obsession with death of this government.

The Municipal Assembly of Portimão, meeting in ordinary session on September 24, 2012, deliberates:

– To effusively salute the hundreds of thousands of citizens and, particularly, the people from Portimo who, indignant, took to the streets on 15 September against the austerity policies of the troika and the current government.

– Demand the resignation of the XIX Constitutional Government, based on the moribund PSD – CDS coalition.

Once approved, this Motion will be sent to the President of the Republic, President of the Assembly of the Republic, Parliamentary Groups, Prime Minister and the media.
