The Socialist Party was represented, by Ana Passos, as national secretary of the Department of Socialist Women, at the XX Congress of the Socialist Women International, which took place in Cape Town, South Africa, between 27 and 28 August.

This congress, under the theme “International Solidarity – Women Working Together for a Better World for All”, was attended by women from around 50 organizations around the world.

The Socialist Women's International is an international organization made up of 145 socialist, social democratic and labor women's organizations from all over the world, which has been in existence for 115 years.

A new Executive Committee was elected at this congress, with President Ouafa Hajji of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) of Morocco, General Secretary Marijj Laffeber of the Dutch Labor Party (PvdA) and eleven new original vice-presidents from different parts of the globe.

Discussion of the different panels gave rise to three major resolutions entitled “International Solidarity – Women Working Together for a Better World for All”; “Violation as a Weapon or Armed Conflict Tactic” and “Cuidad Juarez, 2012: Solidarity Means Combating Violence Against Women”.

Ana Passos was also part of the PS delegation to the XXIV Congress of the Socialist International, which took place in Cape Town, between August 30th and September 1st, under the motto “For a New Internationalism and a New Culture of Solidarity”.

This delegation was headed by the national secretary for International Relations and Cooperation, João Assunção Ribeiro, and constituted by the president of PS Madeira, Victor Freitas, and the leader of the Parliamentary Group of the PS in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, Carlos Pereira.
