I am not a political commentator, nor do I have any pretensions to that, but the Festa do Pontal, which took place on Tuesday night, prompted some reflections.

First, because this will probably be the last time the PSD's big party in the Algarve takes place on the night of August 14th. It's just that, until this year, that night was the eve of a holiday.

But, thanks to the work and grace of the current government, with the help of the “troika”, in 2013 the 15th of August will no longer be a holiday, so the party will have to move to a more auspicious date.

It is still curious that this, which is the last Festa do Pontal on the eve of a mid-summer holiday, was presided over precisely by the prime minister who ended that holiday…

Another issue is the change of the Festa do Pontal, which began as a popular sardine in the Pontal pine forest, near Faro, then moved to new locations, until landing, in recent years, on the Calçadão de Quarteira. Even with all these changes, with more or less organization, the party never stopped being popular – living up to the matrix of the PPD/PSD itself.

But its move to a wedding and baptism hall of a 4-star hotel next to a water park killed, for good, this popular character of the party.

Perhaps this explains the lack of enthusiasm shown by the PSD militants and sympathizers who, on Tuesday night, participated in the party-rally: flags were few and practically only waved when the social democrat leader Passos Coelho entered.

And the speeches barely warmed the night… Are they signs of the times?
