Captain-Lieutenant Vítor Plácido da Conceição was awarded the annual prize by the Royal Institute of Navigation, which decided to reward the results achieved in the master's degree in “Navigation Technologies” that the naval officer attended between 2009 and 2011.

It was through a letter from the director of the Royal Institute of Navigation that Commander Placido da Conceição learned that he had been awarded the prestigious prize.

For the current commander of the corvette Baptista de Andrade, this distinction “constitutes a strong personal and professional incentive to remain committed to research and development of navigation techniques and methods”.

For this Alcobacense, currently residing in Palmela, the moment is also one of sharing, taking the opportunity to “thank the Portuguese Navy military, in particular the Navegators officers, for the teachings transmitted and shared experiences that were decisive for the outcome of the Masters.”

And it also highlights the Navy's commitment “to ensure the continuity of knowledge and the development of navigation techniques, respecting the tradition of Portuguese navigators. Testimony of this result is the fact that the three officers specialized in Navigation who have already attended this Master's, all were awarded this same prize”.

The awarding of the medal and the prize took place in July on the occasion of the Annual General Assembly of the Royal Institute of Navigation, at the Royal Geographical Society, in London.

Comandante Plácido da Conceição attended a master's degree in “Positioning and Navigation Technology”, at the Nottingham Geospatial Institute's of the University of Nottingham, between September 2009 and November 2011, on a part-time basis, having been qualified with the degree of Master of Science with distinction.

The Royal Institute of Navigation is a British scientific association, non-governmental in nature and with public utility status, aimed at bringing together all those interested in navigation, promoting the development of navigation in all its aspects and increasing awareness concerning the importance of navigation.

Captain-Lieutenant Vítor Plácido da Conceição joined the Naval School in 1989, specialized in “Navigation” in 2000. Throughout his career, he has served in several units, including the Frigate Álvares Cabral, on the speedboat Águia, which he commanded from 1997 to 1999 and at the Hydrographic Institute, among others. Since June 28, 2012 he is the Commander of the NRP Baptista de Andrade.
