Turismo do Algarve is a partner of the European Route of Discoveries – DESCUBRITER, a project that integrates the culture, history and heritage of navigation, the discoverers and maritime tradition of the Algarve and Andalusia.

The first expeditions to explore the African coast depart from the Algarve, starting the Age of Portuguese Discoveries in the XNUMXth century. XV, with particular emphasis on Lagos, Vila do Bispo and Sagres, locations strongly linked to the figure of Infante Dom Henrique, the Navigator.

At the beginning of the century. In the XNUMXth century, the province of Seville becomes a port and gateway to the Indies, from there departing and returning all maritime expeditions. In the wake of the Spanish Discoveries are Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cadiz), a logistical and commercial enclave at the mouth of the Guadalquivir, and Palos de la Frontera (Huelva), cradle of the Discovery of America.

These “Discoveries territories”, spread between Cape São Vicente and Sanlúcar de Barrameda, are now united in a project that includes several initiatives for cultural awareness and dissemination: a virtual museum of the Discoveries, tourist promotion actions aboard replicas of historic vessels – Victoria ship and Boa Esperança caravel –, journeys on the Discoveries, a monthly newsletter and a website at www.descubriter.com/en.

The European Route of Discoveries – DESCUBRITER is an initiative under the ERDF budgeted at 560 euros and 75 percent co-financed through the Operational Program for Cross-border Cooperation Spain-Portugal 2007-2013 (POCTEP).

The project is coordinated by Fundación Nao Victoria and counts on the participation of Seville Tourism, Algarve Tourism, Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, Promosagres and the municipalities of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Palos de la Frontera, Lagos and Vila do Bispo.
