The 26 students in the 1st A class of EB1 with JI Pedra Mourinha, from Portimão, read a total of 650 books over the course of the school year, since September.

A record that earned the young students seven diplomas, as they were the champion reading class at this school, under the project «Reading makes you grow and be happy», promoted by the School Library.

According to Carla Almeida, the class teacher, “every week the students requested books from the school library, read with their parents, siblings, grandparents and, finally, already alone. They also recorded what they had learned and liked the most».

"In the end, it was just a matter of counting and making known what is evident: whoever reads or listens to read is more successful in reading and writing".

The “Reading makes you grow and be happy” project was born out of the importance that is increasingly being given to reading from an early age. «As I say, mathematics does not live without the Portuguese language and any area of our life… even dreams!», said teacher Carla Almeida.

Each student was presented by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve with the book «Once upon a time…na Pre-History». The regional director of Culture Dália Paulo made a point of sending a few words to the kids, who were read to them.

«I am very happy to participate with you this end of the year and I would like to congratulate you on the readings you did during the year. And tell you a little story of mine! Since I was little, I've always loved books and that's why I've known many worlds and many different boys from me. So “I ran around the world” without leaving the house and when I arrived at school I helped my friends to look at the difference with “friendly eyes” and to realize that we are all different and this is our strength», wrote Dália Paulo in the message she sent to students of this Portimão class.

“My joy in talking to you today is because, at my time, my school had no library and today your school does, and you all have the possibility of dreaming a lot with your readings,” added the regional director of Culture.
