A combined maritime search and rescue exercise in an area south of the mouth of the Guadiana river, involving the maritime authorities of Portugal and Spain, will take place on Monday, 3 July.

The exercise will be coordinated by the maritime search and rescue center in Lisbon (MRCC LISBOA) and supported by the search and rescue center in Madrid (MRCC Madrid).

According to the Navy, the exercise will consist of "a simulation of the collision between a Portuguese maritime-tourist vessel and a Spanish fishing vessel, resulting in one polytrauma wound, two shipwrecked and one missing."

The exercise aims to "develop the articulation between the two maritime search and rescue centers, as well as the cooperation between entities and means involved in the exercise area, and the interaction with civil protection agents of the two countries in the support and evacuation of victims'.

The exercise counts on the participation of several entities, namely the MRCC LISBOA, Command of the Maritime Zone of the South, Captaincy of the Port of Vila Real de Santo António, Portuguese Air Force, INEM and Spanish counterpart, Fire Brigade of Vila Real de Santo António, Command Relief Operations District, MRCC MADRID, MRSC Huelva, Maritime Captaincy of Huelva, using various Portuguese and Spanish surface and air search means.
