Young writers awarded at the 8th Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen Literary Contest

Last Saturday, June 23, the Municipal Library of Loulé hosted the awards ceremony of the 8th Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen Literary Competition, a joint initiative of the Loulé and Lagos Councils, held through their Municipal Libraries, with the aim to encourage young students to read the works of this writer.

In the Poetry, Prose and Essay category, the big winner of the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education was Mariana Guerra (8th grade), from Portimão, attending the Bemposta Basic and Secondary School. This student presented a text entitled “The Saga of Biwa”, inspired by the works “The Tree”, “The Saga” and “O Silêncio”.

Born in Loulé, Olga Carreira (7th grade), from the EBI School in Salir, was inspired by the short story “A Fada Oriana” to write “O Peixe Arco-Íris”, which earned her second place in the competition.

The third place in this category was Laura Sintra Jorge (9th grade), from Portimão, attending the D. Martinho de Castelo Branco Schools Vertical Group. This student presented the text “A História da Estrela”, inspired by the poem “The Three Kings of the East”.

Three honorable mentions were also awarded: Mariana Lopes (7th year), from Escola EB 2,3 Dr. Joaquim Magalhães, from Faro, with the poem “Praia”, inspired by the works “A Menina do Mar” and “Contos da Terra e do Mar”; Inês Costa dos Santos (7th year), from the EB 2,3 D. Dinis School of Quarteira, Municipality of Loulé, with the poem “Singularidades de Sophia”, inspired by the works “Histórias da Terra e do Mar”, “The Forest” , “The Knight of Denmark”, “The Bronze Boy”, “Christmas Nights”, “The Girl from the Sea”, “The Oriana Fairy”; and Catarina Encarnação (8th year), from Escola EB 2,3 Jacinto Correia, in Lagoa, with the text “Retrato Inesquecível”, inspired by the work “A Árvore” (“the mirror or the living portrait”).

In the Illustration category, the only winner of the 3rd cycle was Miguel Barbosa (8th grade), from Escola EB 2, 3 D. Dinis de Quarteira, Municipality of Loulé. The winner was inspired by the work “The Knight of Denmark”

In terms of awards for secondary school students, Beatriz Pires (12th grade), from Albufeira Secondary School, was the big winner, with the text “O Menino ea Lua”, inspired by several poems and the courage of “Menina do Mar ”.

Second place was Pedro Correia (10th year), from the Júlio Dantas Secondary School, Lagos, with the poem “Tempo”, inspired by the poem by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen “If it hurts me so much that things pass”.

Students Mariana Brazão and Marta Dias (10th year), both from Secondary School of Albufeira, presented the text “Sombra de um amor morte”, inspired by the poem “De um Amor Morto” in “Geografia”, and thus achieved third prize.

Three high school students also received honorable mentions: Stefanie Guerreiro (10th grade), from Escola Secundária de Albufeira, with the text “Like a smiling sun petal”, inspired by the tale “O Silêncio” (“Stories of the Land and the Sea” ); Daniel Domingos Matos (10th year), from the Júlio Dantas Secondary School, in Lagos, with the text “Ausência do Meu Ser”, inspired by the works “Sacode as Nuvens” and “Meditation of the Duke of Gandia on the Death of Isabel de Portugal”; and Inês Simões (12th year), from João de Deus Secondary School, Faro, with the poem “A Cidade Murada”, inspired by the poem “City”.

In the Illustration category, the only one awarded in secondary education was Marta Fontoura (11th grade), from Escola Secundária Júlio Dantas, Lagos, with a work inspired by the poem “Medeia”.

Two honorable mentions were given: Juliana Guerreiro (11th grade), from the Júlio Dantas Secondary School, Lagos, inspired by the poem “Navio Naufragado”; and Mariana Ferreira (11th year), from the Júlio Dantas Secondary School, Lagos, with an illustration inspired by the poem “Assim o Amor”.
