More than 1100 people, including marchers and cyclists, attended the Silves Tour, an initiative of the Municipality of Silves, which took place last Sunday, May 6th. With the sale of t-shirts (which were sold out) and the registration of participants, the municipality raised 2038,40 euros, which were delivered to Refúgio Aboim Ascensão.

"This money will make the children at the Refuge happier," said Luis Villas Boas, the director of this institution, based in Faro and known for her meritorious work in defending children at risk and for developing the Child Emergency concept.

"I am very touched to see that such a large number of people have been mobilized around a solidarity cause, an action that aims to help others," said the director of Refúgio Aboim Ascensão, at the time he received the check with the amount raised by the Chamber of Silves. The local authority, after the test, still received some donations, which it is forwarding to this institution.

Isabel Soares, president of the municipality, surrounded by children who came from Refúgio Aboim Ascensão to visit the city and be present at the Silves Tour, also highlighted the importance of these events in the current situation in the country and the world.

Moved, President Isabel Soares pointed out the possibility of seeing in action the solidarity spirit of the population of the region and the municipality as one of the assets of this event, which, in addition to allowing the delivery of a cash donation to Refúgio Aboim Ascensão, promoted the collection of food that will be delivered to institutions dedicated to its distribution to needy families.

The mayor also mentioned the "great commitment of the municipality's technicians and their personal involvement in the organization of this event, as it was because of their willingness, availability and spirit of solidarity that this action took place."

In fact, the organization of the Silves Tour had 30 volunteer employees of the municipality, as well as ten other volunteers from other partner institutions of the municipality, namely clubs and associations, who organized the cycling event and guided it.

In addition to these volunteers, several public and private institutions joined the CMS initiative, supporting it in some way, either as Partners (Grouping of Armação de Pêra Schools, GADAG, Clube Xelb, Grupo Amigos de Messines), or as Support (IPDJ – Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, National March and Run programme, Água Serra da Estrela, Continente, RestXelb – pool bar, AR Publicidade, Paulo Publicidade, Publiradio, My Dinamic, Silves School Group, Silves Group SB Messines Schools, Silves Secondary School, Azogla, Piaget Institute, AE Silves Student Association, Holiday Inn, Colina Hotels & Resorts, Frutas Martinho, Frutas Mourinho, Francisco Vieira e Filhos, Lda – Oranges do Algarve, LARA – Orange do Algarve, SA, Columbófila Society of SB Messines, Parish Councils of Algoz, Armação de Pêra, Pêra and SB Messines, Portuguese Red Cross, GNR of Silves, Silves Volunteer Firefighters, SB Messines Volunteer Firefighters), either like media (Algarve FM radio and Sul Informação).

One of the institutions that collaborated in this event was Continente, which made a donation of foodstuffs to Refúgio Aboim Ascensão, consisting of porridge, milk, yogurt, cereals, fruit, rice, spaghetti, ice tea, sugar and flour.

On the other hand, the Municipality of Silves, with the support of the various School Groups in the county, raised half a ton of food (milk, pasta, beans, grain, rice, cereals for breakfast, baby food, olive oil, oil, preserves , flour, sugar, biscuits.), which will be delivered to institutions that distribute food to needy families in the Algarve region.

Those who participated in the race march can choose to do a route of 4 or 9 km; those who took the bicycle tour departed from SB Messines (20 km), or from Armação de Pêra (20 km), or from Algoz (20 km), or from Silves (17 km). This was the 4th edition of the Silves Tour, an initiative that was integrated in the regional calendar of marches of the IPDJ.
