The municipality of São Brás de Alportel will host, on the 9th of May, the Commemorations of Europe Day 2012, in the Algarve, with a series of initiatives that count with the presence of the manager of PO Algarve 21 David Santos, of the Mayor António Eusébio and deputy Pedro Marques, among many other individuals.

Celebrated since 1985, on May 9, Europe Day aims to promote activities that bring Europe closer to its citizens and the peoples of Europe among themselves. In this year's edition, São Brás de Alportel hosts these celebrations whose main themes are Energy Efficiency and the Intergenerational Debate, which will be the theme for a day filled with a guided tour of the municipality, as well as a series of presentations, exhibitions, workshops , games, among many other initiatives.

The Municipal Covered Swimming Pools building will host the commemorations that begin on the morning of the 9th with the flag-raising ceremony, accompanied by the national anthem and an intercultural welcome message, with the participation of some foreign students from the José Belchior Viegas School Group.

This is followed by the opening of the exhibition “Olhares sobre Europa em São Brás”, a photography exhibition by the Digital Photography Workshop of São Brás de Alportel, under the coordination of photographer Rui Serra Ribeiro. It is a photographic retrospective of emblematic works that contributed to the modernization of the municipality of São Brás de Alportel in the last two decades, with the support of European Union funds.

The commemorative program continues with a guided tour of the covered Municipal Swimming Pools building, where the energy solutions implemented in this work will be presented, continuing this visit to some of the buildings that mark the presence of community support in the municipality, namely the modernization of the School Park, network of sports facilities and the Circular of São Brás de Alportel, in a visit under the guidance of the Mayor, António Eusébio.

The celebrations program involves the entire school community, involving the realization of multiple playful activities - educational and fun online games, through which young students can learn, playing, to use the interactive whiteboards that equip the new generation of classrooms. class, because for the success of the new learning processes, the monitoring of new teaching methods and strategies supported by new technological tools is crucial.

This is one among multiple results of the execution of the “Delegation of Competences Contract” signed in 2009 between the Algarve Operational Program Management Authority (PO Algarve 21) of QREN and the Intermunicipal Community of Algarve, within the scope of the Requalification of School Network for Basic Education and Pre-School Education.

On the main stage of this Europe Day, in the outdoor enclosure of the Municipal Indoor Swimming Pools of São Brás de Alportel, various activities take place throughout the morning, permanent animation, theater exhibitions, choreographies, plastic arts, painting, solar ovens and European Information, promoted by the Europe Direct Centre, in collaboration with the José Belchior Viegas School Group and the Bernadete Romeira School of Olhão.

In the afternoon, the Hall of the City Hall hosts the Intergenerational Debate on the theme “Growing and Aging in the European Space”, which has as special guest Mr Pedro Marques, who will be alongside students from the Senior University of São Brás de Alportel and of the 12th grade students of José Belchior Viegas Secondary School to discuss this interesting topic, within the scope of the European Year of Active Aging and Solidarity between Generations, with the collaboration of the delegation of Faro of the Youth Institute.

The regional program for the celebrations of Europe Day, which this year has chosen São Brás de Alportel as its headquarters, is an initiative organized by the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission, through PO Algarve 21 and Centro Europe Direct, in partnership with the City Council of São Brás de Alportel.
