The deputies that make up the Parliamentary Committee on Economy and Public Works visited the Port of Portimão, having been sensitized to its development potential and to the constraints that hamper this growth.

The group met with representatives of the Port and Maritime Transport Institute and the Portimão City Council, keeping abreast of the main existing gaps that are considered fundamental investments, namely the improvement of accessibility to the port, the dredging of the channel and the port maneuver basin at an elevation of -10, the extension of the berth, the acquisition of a multifunctional tugboat to support the ships and the construction of a passenger terminal in good condition.

Following this visit to the Port of Portimão, members of the political forces represented on that commission were alerted to the urgency of taking legislative initiatives aimed at unblocking the current impasse, related to the lack of investment by the Central Power.

The need to integrate the management of the Algarve's ports into the sphere of port administration was also identified, given the growing importance of the sector for the regional and national economy, expressed in the increase in cruise tourism and in the increase in export cargo.

Over the past four years, the number of cruise passengers handled at the Port of Portimão grew 673%, from 5.798 passengers handled in 2007 to 44.841 passengers in 2011, with 45 stopovers already confirmed this year.
