On the day that marks the 38th anniversary of the revolution of 25 April 1974, the citizens of Portimão have the opportunity to exercise their democratic right, taking part in the fourth and final assembly on the Participatory Budget for 2013, presenting their proposals for the future of the municipality.
On the other hand, the political parties with seats in the Municipal Assembly, which are part of the organizing committee of the April 25 commemorations, decided this year not to hold the traditional solemn session that took place in the Main Hall of Paços do Concelho, opting to publicize their reflections on the meaning of April 25 today through the official website of the Portimão Chamber, which will be made available the day before in www.cm-portimão.pt.
The official ceremonies on April 25th begin at 10:30 am with the raising of flags in Praça 1º de Maio and the interpretation of the national anthem and some of the themes of the April songbook, by the Conjunto Coral of the Academia/ESPAMOL Professional Course and by Fanfarra of the Volunteer Fire Department of Portimão, followed by a street and pigeon dropping.
At a sporting level, the highlight goes to the Freedom Race, which, from 10:00 am, will bring together for the eighth year in the Portimão Riverside Zone a few hundred athletes. Applications can be made until April 23 at the Algarve Athletics Association.
The popular party is scheduled for 15:00 pm in the Portimão Riverside Zone, next to the Antiga Lota, with lots of music, dance, folklore and entertainment for everyone and the participation of Edmundo Inácio, Dance Group “As Estrelinhas” of the A CAPELA Association, Ana Baptista, Grupo de Dançares Santomenses, Lurdes Carriçal, Rancho Folclórica da Figueira and Portuguese Popular Music Group “Os Barlaventinos”.
The Hall of Portimão City Hall will stage, from 17 pm onwards, another practical demonstration of responsible democracy, through the last participatory assembly, in which all citizens have two hours to present and discuss in a group dynamic. and to score their proposals, with the two most scored per table inscribed in the Participatory Budget, for subsequent technical analysis.

Music, movies and lots of entertainment
The day before, the documentary “48”, by Susana de Sousa Dias, will be shown in the small auditorium of the Municipal Theater of Portimão (Tempo), in a session aimed at schools and scheduled for 14:00 and later at 19:00 for the general public with tickets at 2 euros that can be purchased on site. The film, which received some international distinctions, addresses the topic of torture and challenges the audience to reflect on this issue.
That night, from 21 pm, the Grande Tempo Auditorium will stage the 30th of April Commemorative Concert by the Conservatory of Music of Portimão, with the special participation of singer Ondina Santos, accompanied by musicians Tiago Sequeira (piano), João Rocha ( trumpet), Tuniko Goulart (guitar) and Vasco Ramalho (percussion).
Conducted by a children's choir from the Portimão Conservatory, under the responsibility of Carla Martins, the program revisits Zeca Afonso's greatest work. Tickets, at a unit price of 5 euros, can be purchased at the Tempo ticket office, with a discount. 50% for holders of Senior Passport, Disabled Persons Card and Municipal Youth Card.
Reference is also made to the documental exhibition “Politics, politicians and others”, which can be seen until May 2 at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library and which makes known to the local community its documentary background, presenting some classified documents that have marked the thinking of Portuguese society throughout the XNUMXth century.
For the second year in a row, the image to publicize the April 25 celebrations in Portimão was developed by Design students from ISMAT – Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes, in a challenge to the creativity of young people, who were invited to reflect on the importance of this milestone historical, being the official poster authored by João Matias, 2nd year student.
In addition to the official program, on April 21st and 28th, the municipality will take to the streets to commemorate the date through a vast program of festivities organized by the dynamic local associative movement and aimed at everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, with various sporting and artistic activities.
