The Portimão City Council has decided to continue its social support policy for the 720 families residing in the municipal housing stock and who have many difficulties in meeting their monthly expenses.

In this sense, the municipality decided to maintain the value of free rents for 26 dwellings located in Coca Maravilhas, between 100 and 158 euros, with rents below these amounts having been increased by only one percent to support management expenses.

Regarding supported rents, they were updated according to the household income and will benefit 390 families, which will save approximately 16.000 euros.

The value of these incomes will range between 4,85 euros (1% of the national minimum wage) and 246 euros, having been calculated based on the gross monthly income of each household, its composition and number of dependents, which determined the fair value of monthly income.

According to the Chamber, the city's social support policy "takes into account that these families only live on their meager salaries or pensions, with many of them being unemployed due to the current socioeconomic situation, mainly due to the crisis in hotels and construction".

In addition, the Municipality of Portimão continues to assume responsibility for all maintenance and upkeep expenses for the municipal housing stock, comprising 720 dwellings, which in 2011 were budgeted at around 400.000 euros.

The decision will allow beneficiary families to save around 21.000 euros, an amount that will not enter the municipal coffers in this way, but will benefit households with scarce resources.
