A total of 320,18 tonnes of waste were collected in nine municipalities in the Algarve, on 24 March, during the journey of the Clean Portugal 2012 project.

The main waste collected was “monsters” (furniture, mattresses, appliances, wood, non-packaging plastics) and construction and demolition waste (CDW).

The municipalities where the most waste was collected were Albufeira, Loulé and Faro.

All waste collected on March 24 was delivered to vehicles in the participating municipalities (Albufeira, Castro Marim, Faro, Loulé, Monchique, Silves, Tavira, Vila do Bispo and Vila Real de Santo António), at the premises of the Algar company, ie, at the landfills in Portimão and Barranco de Velho and at the transfer stations in Albufeira, Castro Marim, Faro/Loulé/Olhão, Tavira and Vila do Bispo.

This time, CCDR Algarve was designated, through Ordinance no. 63/2012, of 20 March, as the registration entity for all claims to join the project, having registered several entities, including local associations, NGOs and municipalities. , which proposed to collect waste that was unduly abandoned along roads, in the woods, along the banks of water lines and in urban areas.

The Clean Portugal 2012 project has consolidated, for the third consecutive year, the action of the civic movement organized by a group of citizens, whose purpose is to eliminate as many places as possible with illegal waste disposal, through the voluntary cooperation of citizens and entities .

According to information from the CCDR, last year, only 3,7 tons had been collected. «The substantial increase in the amount of waste was due to the anticipation of the CCDR, which previously transmitted the information to the Chambers, even before the Ordinance was released».
