Negotiations with a river-maritime cruise company to establish a weekly connection between the ports of Portimão and Seville "are proceeding at a good pace", revealed the Municipality of Portimão.

These negotiations, according to the municipality, follow on from the joint work being carried out by the ports of Portimão and Seville to attract cruise ships to the Algarve and Andalusia.

The itinerary currently under technical evaluation includes calls at the ports of Seville, Vila Real de Santo António, Olhão and Faro, with turn-around operations (passenger embarkation and disembarkation) in Portimão, enabling the organization of tourist packages for passengers staying in the Algarve region, «which could create good economic dynamics in hotels, restaurants, local commerce and at the International Airport of Faro».

Strategically located at the confluence between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and benefiting from unique natural conditions, the Port of Portimão has had a significant increase in the number of cruise passengers in the last four years, from 5.798 in 2007 to 44.841 last year, which represented a growth of 673 percent.
