The Municipality of Lagos celebrates, on April 29, the European Day of Solidarity between Generations, inviting the population to exercise, to be more supportive, and to help older people continue to play an active role in society and live lives as healthy, independent and happy as possible.

This will be the fourth time that, at European level, the Solidarity between Generations Day is celebrated. This year, the Municipality of Lagos joins the commemoration of this anniversary – April 29th – inviting the population of Lacobrigens to take a family walk along Avenida dos Descobrimentos or anywhere in the municipality, to visit their grandparents, a neighbor, an elderly person, telling someone a story… basically having a gesture of solidarity preventing this from being a lonely Sunday,

The European Year of Active Aging and Solidarity between Generations aims to raise awareness of the contribution of older people to society and the support we can provide in this regard. It intends, in practice, to encourage and mobilize policy makers and key actors at all levels to take action, creating better opportunities for active aging, and strengthening solidarity between generations.

By dedicating 2012 to this theme, the European Union intends to place on the political and social agenda the challenges posed by demographic aging in our societies. It is estimated that, within a few years, the European working age population will decline, while the population aged 65 and over will continue to increase at a rate of two million a year. In 2060 there may be one elderly person for every two people of working age.

Recognizing the importance of the initiative, the municipality is organizing a series of activities, including an awareness-raising action on cardiovascular diseases, taking place on May 12th, and the colloquium of the “Saúde em Movimento” project, which will take place on the 18th and 19th of May. The latter, subordinated to this theme of active aging and solidarity between generations, is aimed at all age groups, seeking, through the participation of young and younger people, to encourage and reinforce “solidarity between generations”.

The “Saúde em Movimento” project, now in its 9th edition, is an intervention project, under the responsibility of the Municipality of Lagos, aimed at the population over 40 years old, with the main objective of improving the quality of life of citizens and developing a healthy lifestyle, through cognitive stimulation activities and enjoyment of walking.
