The researcher at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) Maria do Rosário Pereira Fernandes won the 2011 Fluviary Award – Young Scientist of the Year with the scientific article «Assessing riparian vegetation structure and the influence of land use using landscape metrics and geostatistical tools».

The Scientific Committee of the Fluviário de Mora Research Nucleus also decided to award an Honorable Mention to candidates Joana Cristina Cardoso Teixeira Ribeiro and Rita Maria Pina Vasconcelos, researchers, respectively, at the University of Aveiro and at the FCUL Oceanography Center.

The award-winning study is part of the programmatic plan of the ForBio research line, “Biodiversity Management in Forest, Aquatic and Agro-forestry Systems” of the Forestry Studies Center of the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, and aimed to explore the possibility of characterizing the spatial structure of riparian vegetation (riverbank vegetation) using remote sensing instruments and to study the effects of land use on the structure of riparian vegetation.

This is the 2nd edition of that Award, an initiative that is increasingly asserting itself as a reference in the valorization of Scientific Research carried out by young people in the country, in the area of conservation and biodiversity of continental aquatic resources (Estuaries and Rivers).

Until December 31, 2011, the Fluviário de Mora received 19 applications, all considered for evaluation.

The Jury was made up of 31 personalities who analyzed the articles according to the evaluation criteria defined in terms of three major parameters: Scientific merit; Clarity and quality; Contribution to the conservation and biodiversity of continental aquatic resources. Each article was evaluated by two members of the jury.

The Fluviário de Mora and its Research Nucleus salute the candidates and the excellence of the works presented, which once again honored the second edition of the Fluviário Award – Young Scientist of the Year 2011, contributing to the dissemination and appreciation of the important role of young researchers for the development of knowledge in the areas of Conservation and Biodiversity of Continental Water Resources (Rivers and Estuaries).
