"I'm loving it, the kids are super excited and the storytellers are very happy with the reaction." It was in this way that Inês de Almeida, 11th G student of the Technical Course on Event Organization at Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School, in Portimão, summed up the success of the 1st Festival of Tales for Children.

The Festival, which is running until May 7th, is intended for students from the Kindergartens and 1st cycle of Portimão.

O Sul Informação accompanied the presentation of the puppet play «Uma Noite», by Carla Travessa, Carla Paixão and Fátima Mártires, teachers at the Escola EB 2/3 D. Martinho Castelo Branco, at EB1 in Pedra Mourinha. As Madalena Marçal, from the direction of this elementary school, said, "remembering the old saying, if Mohammed doesn't go to the mountain, the mountain goes to Mohammed." And so, as the children from EB1 were not able to get transport to the auditorium of the Secondary Teixeira Gomes, the artists and the group of organizers went to the school in Pedra Mourinha.

Altogether, at this school, more than a hundred children attended the show that brings together the story of Xerazade, Aladdin, the Genius of the Lamp and Ali Babá and the 40 Thieves, more than a hundred children who were thrilled with the magical way in which these tales were presented. They laughed, screamed in fear or joy, answered the questions posed by the three storytellers.

"The important thing is that the children like it a lot!", commented, proud of the success of the Festival of Tales, another of the students from the 11thG class, Alexandru. Another colleague of his, Ana, on the other hand, stressed the importance of the “connection between everyone”.

Professor Helena Tapadinhas, who, together with the class, helped organize this Festival of Tales, explained to the Sul Informação that the goal is “to take the dream to schools!”. «We want to involve the 1st Cycle schools and the Kindergartens around short stories and theater for children, taking advantage of local assets – in Portimão and beyond».

In fact, the Festival is promoted by the 11thG of the Event Organization course, but the 11th and 11thB students of the Child Support Courses, also from the Secondary Teixeira Gomes, or the teachers Carla Travessa, participate as storytellers, Carla Paixão and Fátima Mártires, from EB D. Martinho Castelo Branco, teacher Paula Faria from EB23, Eng. Nuno Mergulhão, and also Alexandra Tavares and Zezinha Carocinho, respectively from the Municipal Libraries of Portimão and São Brás de Alportel. “There are schools to do and schools to see”, emphasizes Helena Tapadinhas.

This teacher was, for years, responsible for the Regional Program of Environmental Education for Art (PREAA), which this school year was canceled, has been linked to the theater and is the author of «Contos do Mago», a book with 10 short stories that served as base to the last PREAA cycle and which now serve as the basis for this Festival.

«The idea of this event is to put these students, who are future professionals of the Events Organization, to carry out activities within the scope of their specialty, testing what they learn at school in practice. Professional courses have this practical aspect, so the students have to work, they have to face the difficulties of organizing an event», he explained.

On the other hand, «being Portimão a city of events par excellence, I am convinced that they will have, in the future, many opportunities to demonstrate their value, professionally», added Helena Tapadinhas.

So far, hundreds of children from the Kindergartens and Basic Schools in the municipality of Portimão have already attended the festival's sessions, either in the ESMTG Auditorium and in other spaces of this Secondary School, or in the various schools. And more will follow, until May 7th. The organization estimates that, over the 1st Festival of Tales for Childhood, 1500 children from public and private schools will participate.

So far, everything has been going very well and the enthusiasm of the 11thG students is great (who even consider themselves the 11thG of Gostosos…). In such a way that Ana, one of the students, says that it is necessary to start preparing “the 2nd Festival”.
