The severity of the drought in the southern region eased in late March, particularly after rainfall recorded in the last two days of the month, announced the Meteorology Institute.

According to the IM, in the Algarve and Alentejo the rainfall recorded was close to the average values for March.

Despite this, the entire territory of the continent remained, at the end of last month, in a meteorological drought situation, with 57% of the area in extreme drought and 41% in severe drought, the two highest levels of severity of this period. climatic phenomenon on the scale used by the Meteorology Institute.

The occurrence of precipitation in an amount below the average for this month contributed to this situation, with a record of only 1/3 of the average values for the continent.

The forecast of rainfall conditions for April does not currently provide conclusive information from the second week of the month onwards, so it is not possible to identify the most likely weather scenario.

IM says it can only say that the occurrence of precipitation in the average values for the continent (79 mm) could lead to an alleviation of the severity of the meteorological drought, more significant in the southern region.

The Meteorology Institute, through its Drought Observatory, will continue to monitor the situation, which will be updated with reference to April 15th.
