“Earth Hour 2012”, an initiative that consists of turning off the lights for 60 minutes, on March 31, has the participation of the Municipality of Vila do Bispo which, between 20:30 pm and 21:30 pm, will join the world in the global blackout, switching off the lighting in public buildings for this purpose.

In this context, the City Council also appeals to citizens to adhere to this symbolic act, turning off, if possible, the lights, television, computer, alarm clock, or any other appliance in their homes.

This is a global-scale initiative of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – World Nature Fund, in which millions of people, companies, governments and communities are invited to turn off their lights for one hour on that date and period, sensitizing the population to the importance of taking measures to mitigate climate change on the planet.

The event was created in 2007 in Sydney, and in 2011 was designated as the largest campaign carried out on the planet with the participation of 135 countries and territories on all continents, thus becoming an important global voluntary movement, where hundreds of millions of people from all corners of the world come together to recognize the usefulness of protecting our planet.

WWF is one of the largest independent nature conservation organizations, with nearly five million adherents and a global network active in over 100 countries.

WWF's mission is to halt the degradation of the planet's natural environment and build a future in which human beings live in harmony with nature, by preserving the world's biological diversity, ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable and promoting reduction of pollution and waste.
