Next Saturday, March 31, the Municipality of Portimão will once again join “Earth Hour” in the fight against climate change, inviting residents and businesses in the municipality to follow suit and turn off the light between 20:30 pm and 21:30 pm.

In a symbolic gesture, the lighting in the following emblematic buildings and public places will be interrupted: Paços do Concelho and Praça 1º de Maio; Portimão Museum; Main Church of Portimão; TEMPO – Municipal Theater of Portimão; College Church; Alvor Mother Church; Market on Av.ª S. João de Deus; Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library; Mother Church of Mexilhoeira Grande; Municipal Auditorium; Manuel Teixeira Gomes Square; and ornamental fountains at Rotunda Salgueiro Maia and Rotunda dos Três Castelos.

Considered the largest voluntary action in favor of the environment worldwide, this annual initiative aims to raise awareness of the dangers of climate change, encouraging cities around the world to turn off the lights for an hour, an idea promoted by the conservation organization of nature WWF – World Wide Found for Nature.

In this sense, all Portimonsians are invited to join the initiative and turn off the lights in their homes and businesses between 20:30 pm and 21:30 pm, in a civic act that aims to promote good energy habits, while alerting the public conscience. for the problematic.

Last year, more than 5.200 municipalities joined, in a total of 135 countries from all continents, with emphasis on mega cities such as New York, Beijing, Nairobi, Hong Kong, London, Rio de Janeiro, Paris and Singapore, whose main icons were only illuminated by starlight.

Why turn off the lights?

First of all, we must be aware that this turning off of lights for an hour is merely a symbolic gesture, but that it can be representative of raising everyone's awareness towards a problem that is equally shared by everyone: climate change.

The truth is that this simple gesture has awakened commitments around the world capable of making a difference on a continuous daily basis and has led to a real change in the life habits of citizens, companies and governments that are beginning to wake up to valid and practical commitments in favor of this fight.

So, turn off the lights:

It is to show that we are concerned about global warming and we want to make our contribution, influencing and asking for actions to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change, combating deforestation and conserving our ecosystems.

It is a gesture that symbolizes efficiency and the use of all resources intelligently, responsibly and sustainably.
