Health minister Paulo Macedo will speak this Thursday, 15th, at 18 pm, at the opening ceremony of the 29th National Meeting of Family Medicine, which runs until March 17th in Vilamoura, at the Tivoli Marina Hotel.

Under the motto “Managing Change, Generating Trust”, the 29th edition of the great annual event, promoted by the Portuguese Association of General and Family Medicine (APMGF), centralizes a panoply of pertinent and current themes about the challenges and changes that physicians face of general and family medicine cross and their responsibilities in this scenario.

In an interview with Jornal Médico de Família, official organ of the Portuguese Association of General and Family Medicine, (which will be distributed next Thursday, after the opening ceremony), Paulo Macedo guarantees: “primary health care is a priority for us ”.

The minister also added that the Government will “approve the health units that the ARS propose, as long as our financing capacity is assured. We have to support and encourage the evolution of the current UCSP to the next organizational stage, the USF”.

The improvement of information systems, the articulation between the various levels of care and the training of more family doctors, are other priority measures set out by the head of the Health portfolio, who will chair the opening session of the 29th Meeting.

“We are going to create decent conditions so that young specialists can fill the vacancies that result from the needs detected in the different regions. However, we cannot lose sight of the fact that we have to hire the necessary doctors to achieve the goal of giving everyone a family doctor”, said Paulo Macedo.

Pointing out the need to attract more young people to FGM, the government official emphasizes that this is a work that has to be done from the faculties, which are still very “hospital-centric”.

However, the tutelage undertakes to reinforce interest in FGM through the opening of more vacancies for the specialty, the “effort to expand the USF” and “opportunities to link up with clinical research and academia”.

According to Paulo Macedo's forecasts, by the end of the year, around 30 family health units should move to Model B. As for the health center groupings, the government official emphasizes that “they need to be more efficient in their central structures ”. Your concentration “could contribute to that”.

Almost thirty years old, the Portuguese Association of General and Family Medicine (APMGF) celebrates the 29th edition of the National Meeting, an event that marks the beginning of a new stage in the organization's history.
The Portuguese Association of General and Family Medicine has always been and will continue to be a project association, restless and visionary in its work towards the quality of primary health care.

For this reason, the 29th National Meeting of FGM confronts the difficult times we are living with an unshakeable will to face the complexity of the challenges facing civil society.
