The Municipality of Lagos prepared a special program, between March 21st and 24th, with activities in the city's various cultural facilities and public spaces, aimed at encouraging, promoting and disseminating Poetry as a literary genre.

To mark World Poetry Day, the autarchy conceived a diversified and comprehensive program regarding the target audiences and spaces involved, with the objectives of disseminating poetry and encouraging its enjoyment and creation, stimulating personal creativity and aesthetic sensibility. , as well as the circulation of audiences between the various cultural facilities.

The proposed initiatives range from the personal production of poetic texts, through the offer and declamation of poetry in cultural spaces, to the distribution of poetic texts in the trees of some public spaces in the city.

«Listening to Silêncio a Ler» is another proposal presented for the promotion of reading, this time by the Gil Eanes Schools Group, to which the Municipal Library of Lagos was associated, and which consists of a thirty-minute break for reading throughout. the schools of this grouping. All these activities have the support of the municipal company Lagos-Em-Forma, the Senior Theater Group of the Municipality of Lagos and the Centro de Estudos de Lagos.

On the 23rd, and organized by Neusa Dias, the Recital “Portugal in Prosa & Poesia” will also take place at the Cultural Centre, which “creatively looks at what various authors have written about geographical, cultural and historical landscapes where the Portuguese live (and who live in them)”.

“Coimbra, July 19, 1974 – It has been from coffin to grave. Poor country! And what is yet to come! But I cannot, nor do I want to lose my footing in the homeland. I will have to face the absurdity of this unhappy hour even with the desire to turn my back on so much and so much disconcertion. The pact I signed was not unlucky in the circumstances. It was with the Portuguese land and the Portuguese language. And I still feel solid ground under my feet, and the poetry continues to sing inside me. My space of freedom is the map of Portugal implied in the sheet of paper on which I write”.

Miguel Torga, Diary XII, 1977

Considering that moments of crisis like the one we are currently experiencing foster tensions and reveal factions that undermine the unity and feelings of identity of communities, Portugal in Prosa & Poesia creatively looks at what several authors have written about the geographic, cultural and historical landscapes in which inhabit the Portuguese (and who inhabit them). In this perspective, we are not looking for praise or reprimands, we just want to discover a poetic filter through which we can think about Portugal and our Portugueseness. However, it is impossible not to notice that, throughout history, the country has been silent and ignored its artists several times, although the opposite is not the case. Thus, it is with Alberto Caeiro, Eugénio de Andrade, Jaime Cortesão, Manuel Alegre, Manuel da Fonseca, Miguel Torga, Sophia de Mello Breyner, Teixeira de Pascoaes, Vergílio Ferreira, and also with Carlos Paredes, Carlos Zíngaro/Jorge Lima Barreto, Fernando Lopes-Graça and Michel Giacometti, who Portugal in Prose & Poetry creates a lens to contemplate Portugal.

Day 21 | 11:15 am to 11:45 am

"Listening to the Silence to Read"

Locations: Gil Eanes School Group and Municipal Library

«Ouvir o Silêncio a Ler» takes place on March 21, for thirty minutes, and consists of a reading break in the entire Gil Eanes Schools Group, which will be associated with the Municipal Library of Lagos. Each participant will, therefore, on that day, bring or order a book, a magazine, a newspaper… and simply read. Wherever you are. At the appointed time. The only person who will not be reading will be someone who will walk around the School, through the silence, “recording it”. Teachers will keep classroom doors open so that «silence» enters, settles in and can circulate…
