The Meteorology Institute coordinates the CLIMIGRA Project, which aims to study the impact of climatic variations on migratory movements in mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Regions.

This multidisciplinary project incorporates climatological information and information from various segments of the physical and social sciences, for the historical cartography of climatic variations and the study of their relationship with migratory movements and land use.

For this project, the historical legacy of climate information in Portugal existing in the IM is of great importance, as the only climate information validated for the national territory.

In addition to the IM, some Universities, Research Centers and Public Institutes in the mainland and in the Autonomous Region of the Azores participate in the CLIMIGRA Project, which is a candidate for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
