The scenic lighting of the Castle of Monsaraz, the Paços do Concelho building and the Parish Church of Reguengos de Monsaraz will be turned off on March 31, between 20:30 pm and 21:30 pm in Earth Hour.

The Municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz participates in this global initiative by turning off the lights of some emblematic monuments in a positive action for the environment, encouraging all citizens to do the same in their homes.

Earth Hour is a global event by the WWF network that invites individuals, businesses, governments and communities to turn off their lights for one hour against global warming and towards a more sustainable way of life. This initiative began six years ago in Sydney (Australia) and in 2011 was considered the largest voluntary campaign on the planet, with the participation of 135 countries and territories from all continents.

This year, Earth Hour uses the platform “I do it if you do it – I Will If You Will” to inspire people to take urgent measures for environmental sustainability, with hundreds of commitments and challenges already in place.

For the first time, this event will extend to the International Space Station, where the astronaut and one of the initiative's ambassadors, André Kuipers, will be watching the planet when the lights go out on March 31 and sharing photos and comments live about this experience through the European Space Agency.

In Portugal, more than 70 cities are taking part and will turn off the lights on dozens of monuments. Supporting the initiative are, among others, Rita Guerra, the Anjos, Sandra Cóias, Joana Seixas, Camané and António Victorino d'Almeida.
