The municipality of Tavira reduced, in 2011, the amount of waste selectively collected by about 6,5% when compared to 2010, reveals the Municipality of Tavira, citing data from the company Algar Valorização e Treatment of Solid Waste.

The collection of recyclable materials was carried out at recycling points, recycling centers, surrounding areas (material deposited outside the recycling points) and large producers, namely, from public and private companies.

Thus, last year, the following materials and quantities were collected: glass (728.870 tons), paper/cardboard (725.830), plastic/metal (382.730 tons), wood (30.067 tons) and batteries (331 tons).

Algar's primary objective is the “selective collection, sorting and treatment of urban solid waste in the Algarve”. In order to fulfill this purpose, a contract is in force with the municipalities of the region, namely, with the one in Tavira.
