The Parliamentary Group of the PCP, through deputies Paulo Sá and João Ramos, asked the Government for information on the navigability project of the Guadiana river, namely, on the conclusions of the environmental impact assessment process, on the date scheduled for the launch of the tender for the implementation project and the expected completion date of the intervention.

These questions sent to the Government follow on from a visit to the municipality of Alcoutim, on the 20th of February, by Paulo Sá, MP elected by the Algarve, part of a delegation of the Municipal Committee of the PCP of Alcoutim.

The communist deputies stress that the municipality of Alcoutim and, in general, the border areas of the Northeast of Algarve and the Southeast of Alentejo "have been facing, for some decades, a process of growing economic and demographic desertification".

“To reverse this process, it would be necessary that, in relation to this region, a set of measures be implemented, among which the improvement of the navigability of the Guadiana River and of the port infrastructure and services plays a relevant role”, consider the parliamentarians.

Following a study on the navigability of the Guadiana River, between the International Bridge and Pomarão, concluded in 2009, the Government, in response to a request from the PCP's Parliamentary Group, informed that the project would be launched at the end of 2010.

But, the deputies stress, “this did not happen! As this project is of great importance for the border area of the Northeast of Algarve and the Southeast of Alentejo, it is important to clarify the intentions of the current Government regarding this matter».
