The 182 years since the birth of John of God, poet and educator born in São Bartolomeu de Messines, will be appointed during the month of March by the Municipality of Silves, in collaboration with several other entities from that town in the municipality.
The official start of the celebrations will take place on March 4th, at 18 pm, with a port of honor and a classical guitar recital by musician Gonçalo Duarte, an activity that will take place at the Casa do Povo in this town and will be organized by this community.
With regard to the actions promoted by the Chamber of Silves, through the João de Deus Museum House, the highlight goes to two ateliers – “Jigsaw Puzzles: João de Deus in Quadradinhos” (March 1st to 31st) and “Homage to João de Deus” (March 8th, at 15:30 pm) – and to the photo exhibition “ Luz e Sombra”, by José Pinheiro Correia, which will be inaugurated in the Multipurpose Room of the Casa Museu on March 5th and will end on the 31st of that month.
On a musical level, the program features a show by the Orff Orchestra of Jardim-Escola João de Deus, on March 8, at 21 pm. This event will be promoted by professor Ana Rita Arvela and her students.
“Moments of Fado” will also be presented at this evening by the same educational establishment.
Linked to music, but in the dance aspect, there will be a “Spring Ball” on March 9th, at 19:30 pm, at Casa do Povo, with the presence of DJ Tyggy.
Also with regard to shows, several theatrical moments are planned, spread over several days of the month and to take place in various spaces of SB Messines. From children's plays, to puppet theater and stand up comedy, there will be sessions for all tastes [see program].
On March 23, the performance of Grupo de Teatro Penedo Grande, a company from Messines, will present the play “Abu Agrilhoado” at the Sociedade de Recreio de Instrução Messinense, at 21:30 pm, and will repeat it on the 25th, at 17:00 pm , at the same place.
As for exhibitions, there are also several possibilities provided for in the program, highlighting on the 3rd, at 17 pm, at the Parish Council, the opening of the exhibition “Creating, Working, Valuing – Women Contribute to the Country's Development”, which will be followed by a debate. This exhibition will close on March 00th.
The debate on various themes is an important part of the actions planned for this month dedicated to João de Deus. Two moments will be of particular interest, due to the novelty of the approaches: the first will take place on March 8 and will simultaneously mark International Women's Day, with a session entitled “Poetry in the feminine, in the land of João de Deus”, in which will be attended by several local poets and a communication will be made on “The Woman in the Poetry of João de Deus”, by Manuel Neto dos Santos, well-known poet of this village. This meeting will take place at the Sociedade de Instrução e Recreio Messinense, at 17 pm.
On the 10th, at 16 pm, at the Parish Council of SB Messines, the theme “Messines, Land of João de Deus and the future” will be debated. On the panel of speakers will be some of the most important local entrepreneurs, such as António Eugénio, Jorge Guerreiro, Vitor Neto, Martinho Filipe and Carlos Vargas.
The program also includes several other initiatives, from cooking workshops to walking tours, allowing all Messinenses and visitors to enjoy the best that this village has to offer.
