The former president of the Academic Association of the University of Algarve Guilherme Portada defended this Tuesday that the director who succeeded him and took office about a month ago «has all the conditions to work» and that he was the one who started the path « for the financial restructuring' of the association, whose accounts were already in deficit when it took office in 2010.
Guilherme Portada reacted with a statement to the announcement made this morning by the current General Directorate of AAUAlg that he would go request an external hearing, to investigate the causes of the 400 euros liability they encountered, by taking possession of the collectivity.
In his statement, Guilherme Portada questioned the timing of the announcement, "in the week that begins, in which several Higher Education students see their scholarship refused."
«The Board of the Academic Association of the University of Algarve, instead of focusing on the theme of Social Action grants and the other problems of our colleagues, decided to proceed with a press conference on the financial situation of AAUALG and announce an audit of the accounts since 2007,” he criticized.
Although the central theme of today's press conference, which Guilherme Portada attended, was the financial situation of AAUAlg, the current president of the association Pedro Barros even addressed the issue of the difficulties of colleagues, following the question of a journalist.
Pedro Barros said he was aware of the issue and announced that he had a meeting scheduled on the subject with the tutelage, for this week, but that this was postponed «for two weeks».
In the communiqué, Guilherme Portada also stated that, when he became president of the association, in 2010, "the financial situation was already difficult" and guaranteed that he had "to sign a note that came from the past to guarantee the current functioning of AAUAlg". But, he said, he did not follow the same path.
Guilherme Portada's predecessors in the direction of the association were Pedro Barros and its current treasurer, Eduardo Almeida, the two speakers at the meeting with journalists.
«It was the Board that I chaired in 2011 that drew up a Financial Restructuring Plan for the Academic Association of the University of Algarve, which only failed because it was necessary to obtain from the University another framework to support negotiations with the Bank. However, as the current Board now recognizes, the loan has become essential due to management decisions taken since 2006, with the participation of several of the current directors», reads the statement by Guilherme Portada.
The current management made it clear this Tuesday that this was a process that came from behind and made it clear that the intervention of the UAlg and the Social Action Services of the institution, to which they publicly thanked her, was essential for the process to arrive to good end.
«Let us all defend the prestige of the association, the most needy students, and let us all focus on the students, on school social action, on pedagogical issues, instead of spending time on “issues outside” the association, serving interests that do not those of the students”, concluded Guilherme Portada, after making the request “let us stop being politicized!”.
