The traditional Encontro de Janeiras will take place at the Cine-Teatro Louletano, this Friday, January 6, at 21 pm, jointly organized by the Municipality of Loulé and the Grupo dos Amigos de Loulé.

Fulfilling the tradition of Reis, this show counts with the participation of several groups of charolas, namely the Grupo dos Amigos de Loulé, Grupo Juventude União Bordeirense, Charola Aldeia Branca (Estoi), Grupo Musical Santa Maria (Faro), Charola Flor de Liz (St. Bárbara de Nexe) and Charola from Clube Monte Negro (Faro).

Janeiras are an old way of celebrating the New Year and the Three Kings Day in many Portuguese villages. The populations are formed in groups, which come to have dozens of elements, sing and animate their localities, going from house to house or placing themselves in a central location, wishing, in a traditional way, a good year to everyone present.

They are often invited to enter the houses, where snacks, children, roasted sausage, red wine, etc. are offered.

In the groups of janeireiros, tambourines, ironworks, drums, accordion and viola are played. Many of these groups in the Algarve have already been in existence for several decades and contribute to keeping one of the oldest customs in the region alive, which is lived in a special way, particularly in the mountain areas.

The price of tickets is 2 euros.
