On January 1st, at 17 pm, the Cine-Teatro Louletano receives the traditional New Year's Concert by the Orquestra do Algarve.

The show will be directed by Maestro Pedro Neves and will have the soprano Sónia Grané as a soloist.

At this moment musical pieces will be performed by composers Pedro António Avondano (1714-1782), Georg Friedrich Handel (1685-1759), WA Mozart (1756-1791), Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868), Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848), Richard Strauss (1864-1949), Johann Strauss (1825 – 1899) and Anne Victorino d'Almeida (1978), the latter in a premiere.

The ticket price is 10 euros.

 

The maestro

Pedro Neves' artistic personality is marked by the depth, coherence and seriousness of his musical interpretation, thus standing out as a promising Portuguese conductor.

His musical path begins at the conservatory of the city of Aveiro, where he studied cello with Prof. Isabel Boiça. Later, he joined the Superior National Academy of Orchestra, in Lisbon, in the class of Prof. Paulo Gaio Lima, where he completed his bachelor's degree in 1996.

In the same year, he received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to continue his artistic improvement with Prof. Marçal Cervera, at the Juan Pedro Carrero Music School, in Barcelona, ​​where he remained until 1999. At the same time, he attended masterclasses with Maria de Macedo, Paulo Gaio Lima, Daniel Grosgurin, Marçal Cervera and Anner Bylsma.

As a cellist, he participated in various formations, including the Portuguese Youth Orchestra, Mediterranean Youth Orchestra, Baden-Wuttenburg Youth Orchestra. Between 1999 and 2005 he joined the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa.

He has appeared on several tours in Spain, France, Germany, Brazil, USA, Japan, Macau, Thailand, among others.

He was awarded in the “Juventude Musical Portuguesa” and “Young Musicians Prize” competitions.

Pedro Neves became interested in directing at an early age and began his career as conductor in 1988 at the Sociedade Recreativa e Musical 12 de Abril, based in his homeland, of which he has been artistic director since 1992.

Alongside his activity as a cellist, he studied orchestral conducting with the renowned pedagogue and conductor Jean Marc Burfin at the Superior National Academy of Orchestra, where he obtained a licentiate degree with high marks.

Due to his growing desire to improve himself as a conductor, Pedro Neves deepened his knowledge with Emílio Pomarico in Milan, attended masterclasses with Alexander Polishcuk and was assistant to Michael Zilm.

Pedro Neves was invited to direct the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, the Tagus National Orchestra, the Beiras Filarmonia, the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra, the Algarve Orchestra, the Porto Casa da Música Symphony Orchestra, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Symphonic Orchestra Portuguesa and the Esproarte Orchestra, of which he was principal conductor from 2004 to 2008.

Pedro Neves is a professor at the Superior National Academy of Orchestra and principal conductor of the Orquestra Clássica de Espinho, where he develops a project with young musicians at the beginning of their professional careers. He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Évora where he is carrying out a PhD on the six symphonies of Joly Braga Santos.

In April 2011 he assumed the position of principal conductor of the Orquestra do Algarve.

He is founder of camerata Alma Mater.

 

Soloist Sónia Grané

 

Sónia Grané studied at EMCN with Manuela de Sá and José Manuel Brandão. He is currently studying with Lillian Watson and Jonathan Papp at the Royal Academy of Music where he recently completed his Masters in Performance with High Distinction and where he is specializing in opera.

Sónia performs regularly in Portugal, France and the United Kingdom not only in recitals but also in opera. Have played Dido Dido and Aeneas (TNSC); Papagena, 1st Lady and 1st Boy The Zauberflöte (TNSC); Cis and Harry (cover) albert herring (Royal Academy of Music); strips Così fan tutte (Verbier Festival) and Lucia The Rape of Lucretia (BYO).

During the last school year she was one of the semi-finalists in the grand Kathleen Ferrier competition, winner of several competitions in RAM and 1st prize in the Oxford Lieder Competition.

She recently won the 1st Prize of the 5th edition of the Portuguese Rotary Foundation Lyric Song Contest.

His future projects include the roles of Pamina Die ZauberflöteSophie The Rose Cavalier and cover of Ninetta La Périchole, several UK solo concerts, including at St.John's Smith Square, St. Martin-in-the-Fields and King's Place.

It is supported by several institutions in the United Kingdom and by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
