The Dakar 2012, which this Sunday, January 1, departs from Mar del Plata, Argentina, for its first stage, has the participation of nine Portuguese.

The most outstanding is the biker Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha WRF 450), who will be sporting number 3 on his back, after his brilliant 3rd place final in the 2011 Dakar, the best classification ever for a Portuguese rider.

This is followed, still on motorcycles, by Paulo Gonçalves (Husqvarna Rally 450 RR), with nº 7, and Ruben Faria (KTM 450 CC Rally), with nº 8. Closing this contingent of Portuguese on motorcycles, is Pedro Bianchi Prata (Husqvarna TE449 Rally), with dorsal 46.

In cars, there are three teams driven by Portuguese, with Carlos Sousa at the front, with the nº 307. Sousa will have the Frenchman Jean-Pierre Garcin as co-pilot. Both ride in a Great Wall vehicle, from the Haval team.

Ricardo Leal dos Santos, whose co-pilot is Paulo Fiuza, who is also Portuguese, runs for the official Mini team, with Mini All4 Racing and bears the nº 312.

The third Portuguese team in cars is sporting the 380 and includes driver Francisco Pita and co-pilot Humberto Gonçalves, who race in SMG.
