The Basic School of Martim Longo (Alcoutim) was named on Sunday after Professor Joaquim Moreira, its patron, eight years after his death.
In this tribute, various local and regional entities were present, including the regional director of Education of the Algarve Alberto Almeida, the mayor of Alcoutim Francisco Amaral and the director of the Group of Schools of the Municipality of Alcoutim, António Amorim.
Among the public, several of Professor Moreira's family members stood out, moved by this tribute, which perpetuates the teacher's work in favor of the development of education in the municipality.
After the mass in memory of the professor, there was the unveiling of the tribute plaque and the visit to the biographical exhibition. In the testimony session, the director of the Alcoutim Schools Group emphasized the “justice of this act”, referring to the “fair tribute” now carried out by the autarchy.
“Being a teacher is also, and essentially, a matter of faith”, said the teacher's son, João Pedro, in the heartfelt words he left in his father's memory, underlining the “too human” character of the educator.
The president of the Alcoutim City Council highlighted the fundamental role of the teacher in teaching in the municipality of Alcoutim, when, for example, he created the Telescola in Martim Longo. “It was the then Father Moreira who, with his will, tenacity and persistence, managed to make dozens of alcoutenejos go further and complete the former 2nd year here”, he stressed.
Francisco Amaral also took advantage of the occasion and the presence of the regional director of Education to regret that the previous governors had not had “one day, one hour, to inaugurate the Martim Longo School, which was financed by the Chamber”. “This school was decided to put a lot of punches on the table, it was taken out with irons” he concluded.
