Last September was warmer than normal and had an average amount of rainfall below the 1971-2000 average.

Despite these climatological characteristics, the average value of the meteorological index of forest fire risk in mainland Portugal was, in September, «slightly lower than the average of the last 10 years and close to the values of 2004 and 2006, having been verified fewer fires and a smaller burnt area», reveals the Meteorology Institute.

For this fire risk value, the «conditions of atmospheric instability recorded in the first half of the month, with the occurrence of significant and widespread precipitation» contributed.

The amount of equivalent carbon released in September by forest fires, estimated using a satellite observation carried out by IM, «was the lowest since 2008 with 38528 tons».

High levels were maintained this month in the accuracy rates of the meteorological fire risk forecast broadcast by the IM, which at the district level were 99,2% and 98,6%, for the 24-hour and 48-hour forecast , respectively.
