The Museum of Costume and Traditions of São Bartolomeu de Messines hosts, on September 24th, the Workshop on Maintenance, Preservation and Recovery of Traditional Costumes.

The initiative, promoted by the INATEL Foundation with the support of the Municipality of Silves, has a total duration of 7 hours (from 9:30 am to 13:00 pm and from 14:30 pm to 18:00 pm), being taught by Madalena Farrajota (theoretical and historical) and by Esmeralda da Silva (practical part).

The objective is to “sensitize cultural associations, in particular folklore groups and ethnographic groups, to aspects related to the practices of handling, packaging and conservation of antique clothing that are part of their collections, favoring the symbolic and historical value of the costumes”, says the Chamber of Silves in a press release. Another of the intentions is to make known the application of textile conservation and restoration techniques to these pieces, which are testaments to social differentiation and artisanal manufacturing processes.

According to the autarchy, the INATEL Foundation has developed a meritorious work in the area of cultural creation and enjoyment, through actions that contribute to the appreciation of various amateur and traditional activities, such as music, theater and ethnography.

These activities have been carried out at national level, in cooperation with affiliated associations and local authorities, and the Foundation considered this Workshop to be held at the Museu do Traje e das Tradições, cultural equipment of the Municipality of Silves, due to its vast material and immaterial heritage , thus providing a practical and educational contribution to the region.
