Zoo de Lagos is already helping to increase the numbers of the almost extinct Rola de Socorro

Algarve Zoo created new project to create Socorro turtledoves

The project is still new, but it has already borne fruit. Lagos Zoo has created a new space for the reproduction of Socorro doves, a species that is extinct in the wild, and one of the pairs it houses has already had two cubs.

These little turtledoves can now be seen at the Zoo in Lagos, in the area dedicated to the Rola de Socorro project, where the focus is on reproducing in captivity this endemic species of the Socorro Island, in Mexico, whose numbers are "very small" and which have been maintained thanks to zoos in several countries.

The final objective of the project «is to send turtledoves to repopulate Socorro Island».
