Maritime Authority assesses safety in caves and on the coast of Lagoa and Silves

Risk assessment is done annually, after winter

Caves and risk strips in bathing areas in the area of jurisdiction of the Captaincy of the Port of Portimão, namely in the municipalities of Lagoa and Silves, were subject to an annual assessment of risk situations on Thursday, the 20th.

The joint action of the National Maritime Authority, in conjunction with the Portuguese Environment Agency and the Municipal Civil Protection Services of Lagoa and Silves, aimed to «survey the geological state of the caves and cliffs on the coast with the objective of identifying cracks or anomalies that may jeopardize the safety of people, maritime-tourist vessels and individuals», according to the National Maritime Authority.

These assessment and monitoring actions of risk areas are carried out annually after winter, «a period in which the activity peaks of mesological agents are verified, namely intense precipitation or concentrated maritime agitation from storms, and inspections of the caves are carried out by the third party consecutive year".
