«A Trapeze of Music» by Prokofiev is heard in Alvor and Cachopo

Concert proposes a lesser-known work by a composer who needs no introduction, side by side with the music of a composer in full maturity

A quintet from the Orquestra Clássica do Sul (OCS) presents its concert «Um Trapézio de Música» at the Church of Alvor (Portimão) and at the church of Cachopo (Tavira), on the 10th and 11th of March, at 21 pm and 30 pm, respectively.

In 1924, while living with the status of exile, Prokofiev receives an unusual commission in Paris: the writing of music for a ballet. So far nothing new, as we were in the years of greatest expansion of ballet as a repository of musical creativity and opportunity for great composers.

The question is that, for this production, which became ballet Trapeze, there were only five instrumentalists available. It is from the material of this unusual musical sketch that Prokofiev collects and reorganizes the contents for his unique quintet.

The concert also includes a piece by Sean Shepherd, a native of the USA, who is one of the composers with the fastest affirmation in the North American continent.

His music has been created according to commissions from some of the most important orchestras in the world and the newspaper Boston Globe argues that Shepherd gives us a taste of “the vital taste of the future”.

This concert presents listeners with a lesser-known work by a composer who needs no introduction, Sergei Prokofiev, side by side with the music of a composer in full maturity (he is 43 years old) and with much to talk about in the future.

Both concerts are free to enter.
