At the end of March, there were only 6 fewer people registered at the Algarve Employment Centers than in February, according to data released this Tuesday, April 20, by the Employment and Vocational Training Institute (IEFP).

According to these numbers, the Algarve had, at the end of the third month of the year, 33.453 unemployed registered with the IEFP services. Although the decline is almost insignificant, it goes against the national upward trend (+0,2%).

If the comparison is made with the same month last year, when the first confinement due to the pandemic was decreed, there is, in the Algarve, an increase of 54,6% of registered unemployed (+11.817).

The maintenance of the number of unemployed registered, in March, in the employment centers of the Algarve, indicates that the recruitment for the tourist sector, which usually starts in February, is late in starting in 2021, due to the uncertainty caused by the pandemic.

Even so, according to IEFP data, there were 397 job offers, in March, in the Algarve, 131 more than last month (+49,2%), which is not unrelated to the beginning of the deconfinement process.

Compared to other regions, after the Algarve, Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, it had the second highest increase in subscribers compared to March last year, standing at +40,7%. Alentejo recorded a 9,6% increase. At the national level, the increase was 25,9%.

By municipalities, Albufeira continues to be the municipality in the Algarve with the highest number of unemployed people registered (6.467). This is followed by Portimão, with 5.437, and Loulé with 5.333 [see graph].

From February to March, the oscillation between unemployed registered by municipality was not homogeneous. There were municipalities, such as Albufeira, which even registered a decrease, while Portimão, Faro or Loulé recorded increases.
