This Wednesday, March 10, takes place, at 10 am, at the Cineteatro Louletano, the International Conference «Clinical Academic Centers: The impact on Clinical research», with the presence of the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education Manuel Heitor.

It will be a joint organization of the Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC) and the Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation, under the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union and has the support of the Municipality of Loulé.

In our role as members of the ABC's executive council, it is very encouraging to think that not even half a dozen years have passed since Manuel Heitor and Adalberto Fernandes, in their ministerial portfolios, feeling the need for a new approach that would incorporate the dynamics that have emerged. were affirming, started, with the Resolution of the Council of Ministers no. 22/2016, the creation of Clinical Academic Centers (CAC).

In its articles, it can be seen that a strategy is intended to strengthen qualification and scientific development in the field of health, namely through growing collaboration between medical schools, hospitals and research units.

O Algarve Biomedical Center it was born on this basis and gave consistency to the articulation between the Hospital Center of the Algarve, which became a university, and the University of the Algarve, which ensured the necessary rapport with the hospital centre, fundamental for its clinical component of teaching.

This gathering of structuring elements, which lends solidity to the missions of the two institutions, the Hospital Center and the University of the Algarve, quickly multiplies its effects in terms of the everyday life of the citizen.

ABC's activities, with the current COVID-19 pandemic, quickly showed the justice of those who deposited in this Clinical Academic Center a look of hope that they were creating one of those differentiating elements that improve a region and the country.

ABC, led by Dr. Nuno Marques, has been playing a crucial role, where the most visible expression is given through the implementation of a Laboratory for the Testing of SARS-COv-2, which has significantly contributed to an increase in the capacity of testing the new coronavirus in the Algarve, Baixo Alentejo and Alentejo Litoral, as well as the responsibility for various initiatives across the country that contribute to mitigate COVID-19 in our country.

These initiatives led to the attribution to ABC of the «Portugal Vences a Covid-19» award from the Manuel António da Mota Foundation.

Thus, it was natural for ABC to play this role in structuring and co-organizing this meeting on «Clinical Academic Centers: the impact on clinical research», an opportunity to debate the essential themes and challenges of clinical research in Europe and Portugal.

The meeting will be attended by several European experts, representatives from different Clinical Academic Centers, who will discuss the role of CACs in clinical research, as well as an opportunity to share experiences on specific clinical issues, practices and operational models of CACs in Europe.

As an example, in the first session, moderated by Prof. Sobrinho Simões, focused on cancer research and the importance of stimulating research networks, will speak: Simon Oberst, authority on quality systems and development of health services. Coming from a background in finance, his current work is in clinical development for oncology, with a focus on structural and process development as well as quality accreditation; Emile Voest, professor of Oncology, is director at Executive board do Netherlands Cancer Institute; Josep Tabernero, director of the Oncology Department at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital and director of Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology, Barcelona, investigator of phase I pharmacodynamic studies as well as translational research projects.

The other session, moderated by Prof. Catarina Oliveira, will focus on the role of CACs in clinical research and their impact on the population, with presentations by Michael Keane (Chairman, Dublin Academic Medical Center), Nuno Marques (President, Algarve Biomedical Center) and Ernst Kuipers (Chairman Executive Board, Erasmus Medical Center).

Minister Manuel Heitor will close the proceedings, focusing on the most significant elements resulting from this international conference.

Two years after the birth of the buildings built from scratch for action in the midst of the ABC strategy, this Portuguese presence in these international research networks is always to be welcomed.

Whether for the importance of stimulating European cooperation between Clinical Academic Centers, or for identifying the needs and opportunities associated with clinical research that lead to the definition of actions to be implemented, in order to reinforce a central role in innovation in Europe.
