University of Algarve integrates new Center of Excellence for pedagogical innovation

With a global budget of 3 million and 750 thousand euros, this center brings together nine partners

A University of Algarve has become one of the nine partners of the new Center of Excellence for pedagogical innovation in Higher Education, called the South and Atlantic Pedagogical Innovation & Excellence Network (SAPIEN).

With a global budget of 3 million and 750 thousand euros, SAPIEN, which brings together nine partners, is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) with the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES) acting as an intermediate beneficiary, within the scope of the “Investment RE-C06-i07 | Impulso Mais Digital 04/C06-i07/2023 – Submeasure Innovation and Pedagogical Modernization in Higher Education – Creation of centers of excellence for pedagogical innovation”.

SAPIEN, led by Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in addition to the University of Algarve, also includes the universities of the Azores, Madeira and Évora, the Polytechnic Institutes of Beja, Portalegre and Setúbal, and Egas Moniz – Higher Education Cooperative.

According to the University of Algarve, in the protocol that formalizes the creation of the consortium, the institutions commit to «promoting pedagogical innovation, with a strong digital component, privileging non-technological areas (social sciences, humanities and arts); and consolidate institutional dynamics of pedagogical modernization in higher education through a systemic approach that favors efficient innovative practices in promoting quality teaching».

Thus, the bet will involve a global strategy based on three lines of action.

«The first establishes a pedagogical model centered on students and their learning, adjusted to the co-construction of knowledge and the development of relevant skills. The second is based on the professional development of teachers on teaching and assessment methodologies aligned with the pedagogical model, using digital tools. The third line of action focuses on enriched, modern and powerful learning environments, with significant integration of technological and digital resources», reads the note from UAlg.

The consortium covers an extensive geographic area in the south of the continent, as well as the Autonomous Regions.
