The fourth and final vessel that was stranded on Praia Grande de Ferragudo was removed from the beach late this Sunday morning, April 7th, in an operation that had the support of a tugboat coming from Sines.

According to the Câmara de Lagoa, responsible for this area inside the Arade river estuary, the day was chosen because this Sunday occurred «the tide will be more favorable to carry out the operation», which lasted all morning and also involved excavation work with machines.

The withdrawal of the maritime tourist vessel «Thor», after previous attempts that were unsuccessful, was promoted by the shipowner.

Luís Encarnação, mayor of Lagoa, highlighted, in statements to Agência Lusa: «operation completed successfully. There are no longer any boats on Praia Grande de Ferragudo, which constituted a safety hazard and constraint for bathing activities”»

On the 2nd, they had been removed three of the four boats that were stranded on the sand of Praia Grande, in an operation conducted by the Municipality of Lagoa, which is now the entity with jurisdiction over the area.

This operation had the support of the Port Authority of Portimão and the collaboration of the owner of one of the vessels, who used a private company.

On that date, the three stranded sailboats were removed, two at the end of 2023 and another two weeks ago, due to the storms that have occurred in recent months.

The Lagoa Chamber asked a private company to remove the 7.90 meter vessel “Lady Stray”, and the 9 meter vessel “Bitten”, apparently of Swedish origin, whose owner could not be identified.

The removal of the 11 meter sailboat “RAN” was requested by the owner and carried out in the same operation carried out on April 2nd.

This operation required extra care, having been carried out by a specialized company, coordinated by the Municipality of Lagoa and accompanied by a team of professional divers, with a Maritime Assistance & Rescue Base next to the Clube Naval de Portimão.

All that was left to do was remove the largest vessel from the Praia Grande sand, an operation that took place successfully today.

In both situations, the National Maritime Authority, through the local Command of the Portimão Maritime Police, guaranteed the safety conditions of the operation.
