Sea storm washed away the sand and destroyed part of the Forte Novo de Quarteira beach walkway

Chamber promises to do everything to resolve the situation quickly

The sea storm that affected the Algarve coast in recent days made the sand disappear and caused the partial destruction of the walkways and urban furniture on Forte Novo beach, in Quarteira, revealed the Municipality of Loulé, which promises that it will make efforts to «solve, this situation as quickly as possible».

Initially, the municipality will carry out “work to remove all debris and other waste accumulated there, in order to clean the entire affected area”.

Later, it is planned to replace the sand, under «a project to recharge the entire sand area between the Quarteira sea front and Ancão beach», which ARH Algarve – Portuguese Environment Agency «already has executed", whose estimated value is around 14 million euros.

«This project was submitted in an application for community funds under the Climate Action and Sustainability Program (PACS). After approval of that application, an international public tender will be opened to carry out the contract to replace the sand», according to the municipality.

«The City Council will subsequently take over the rehabilitation of the walkways and adjacent equipment as soon as the conditions for this are met, that is, when the entire beach is properly “replaced”», he added.

The Chamber of Loulé, «in regards to this regrettable occurrence, causing damage to the tourist image of the region», took the opportunity to publicly reaffirm «the need for the legislator to create the necessary legal conditions, through the institution of a regional fund for an immediate and simplified response to the serious consequences of climatic phenomena, which will increase in frequency in the future».

The municipality also says that it «will remain attentive and will be in permanent contact with ARH Algarve to resolve this situation as quickly as possible».
