Sérgio Godinho works in Loulé on the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April

Cineteatro Louletano's programming for April also features Rodrigo Leão and Moonspell, among many other suggestions

Sérgio Godinho, Moonspell and Rodrigo Leão are the biggest names on Cineteatro Louletano's schedule for April, the month in which the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution is celebrated, but also the 94th anniversary of this cultural space in Loulé.

Portuguese singer-songwriter Sérgio Godinho will perform, precisely, on April 25th, at 21pm, at Largo Duarte Pacheco.

The show, titled “Sérgio & Os Assessores – Liberdade25”, «is the celebration of a career that is intertwined with the history of everyday Portuguese life and that has a song composed in 1974, “Liberdade”, one of its obligatory anthems. The passage of half a century since the harpsichord revolution justifies a new visit to his most engaged repertoire, which in 2024 continues to justify the exponentiation of the word “freedom” and now, also of “25”, as the greatest day of its expression, just as Sophia immortalized in “This is the dawn I was waiting for”», according to Loulé City Council.

The concert is interpreted in Portuguese Sign Language.

Also highlighted in the April program are the concerts by Moonspell and Rodrigo Leão.

In the case of the gothic metal band, the show, an acoustic concert, will take place this Saturday, the 6th, at Cineteatro Louletano.

«After celebrating their thirtieth anniversary and announcing their first symphonic concert together with the Lisbon Sinfonietta, Moonspell recreate surprising versions of their classics, transforming them into novelties, which are the band's trademark», according to the municipality.

Rodrigo Leão, on the other hand, will be the gift for the 94th anniversary of Cineteatro Louletano, on April 19th. The Portuguese artist brings to Loulé «an intimate concert, accompanied on the piano by one of his sons, António Leão».

«“Piano for Piano” is a project that was born after a commission from the Piano Festival in Vila Nova de Cerveira, a challenge that led him to compose two new pieces that are also the beginning of a new path. Rodrigo Leão is the first to say that he is not a pianist, but the truth is that the piano has appeared in his work as a complement to the synthesizers that he has used many times to write memorable melodies and think about the engaging arrangements that he has embodied with the ensembles that he created», describes the Chamber.

These are the “cherries on the cake” of the cinema’s April program, which is extensive and starts on Friday, the 5th, with the dance show “A particle smaller than a grain of dust”, by Sofia Dias and Vítor Roriz. The play will take the stage at 10:30 am, for children from the “Férias para Todos” program, and at 19 pm, for the general public.

This is “a play about the whole and the parts, about the collective and the individual, and the weight that each of us has in the changes that are sometimes so necessary. Regardless of the size or complexity of the systems, sometimes a speck of dust in the gear is all that is needed to change the future».

On the 7th, Sunday, at 11:30 am, there will be a Promenade Concert, with “Os Loucos Anos 20”, «in a journey that the Orquestra do Algarve proposes to us through the jazz songbook from the beginning of the XNUMXth century, by Gershwin, Cole Porter and Kurt Weill. It is directed by maestro Martim de Sousa Tavares, with presentation by Rui Baeta. The Promenade are commented concerts, adapted for young audiences and families, in which you learn a little more about the origins of the compositions and composers».

On April 9th, Tuesday, at 21pm, in the Solar da Música Nova Auditorium, another film from the “Filme Français do Mês” cycle, organized by Alliance Française Algarve, in partnership with Cineteatro Louletano, will be shown.

This time it's “Exfiltrés”, «the story of two young activists in Paris who set up a high-risk exfiltration operation to bring back to France a mother and her young son, trapped in the hell of Daesh».

On the 10th and 11th, Kind of Black Box goes to primary schools with the workshop “A Explosão da Cor”, an art workshop that operates in a mobile unit, aimed at young people in the 2nd and 3rd cycle.

«In the days following April 25, 1974, art took to the streets and there was an unprecedented artistic and graphic explosion, with posters and murals. This workshop explores with young people the images of that explosion of color in 1974, also promoting conversations between young people and some former Portuguese political prisoners», describes the Câmara de Loulé.

The workshop is complementary to the play “Em Silêncio”, created by Teresa Sobral, with a session for the general public on the 12th, at 21:00 pm (play with interpretation in Portuguese Sign Language), and sessions for schools at 10:00 am and 14:30 pm, on the day 11, and at 14 pm on the 00th.

«“Em Silêncio” takes a journey through 48 years of dictatorship in Portugal, with dizzying and passionate auditory and visual dynamics. A text constructed from the voices of people who lived through that time, who were imprisoned for political reasons, who lived in hiding or who took refuge abroad or even who fought against the Colonial War, among many other voices».

From the 15th to the 19th of April, another workshop will take place, also marking the 50th anniversary of the April Revolution, but this time in Salir, in the Parish Council Auditorium.

It’s called “Common History Wall” and is organized by the Companhia de Música Teatral. “Where were you on April 25th?” is the starting question for “common stories”. From them and through work with the community, an installation will be built, which is also a sound experience, inspired by the “murals” that filled the streets after the 25th of April. A “mural” about Freedom and the care it needs to survive. Participation is open to people born after April 25, 1974, with registration via email at [email protected].

On the 18th, an opera, “or rather semi-opera”, will debut at the Cineteatro Louletano.

It’s called “Vencer o Dia” and is brought to the stage by the cultural association Questão Repetida, with the collaboration and participation of users of ASMAL (Algarve Mental Health Association). “Vencer o Dia” is a show “that belongs to everyone, but belongs to no one”.

«That's how we decided, and inside it we put an opera with too many things, things that seemed so different, so unique, but that in the end, say the same thing», say the companies, ARTIS XXI and Questão Repetida. There are two sessions, one at 10:30 am for schools (preschool) and another at 21:00 pm for the general public.

On the 21st, Cineteatro Louletano hosts and co-produces the seminar “Mudamos Juntos? Meeting with Artists”, created by Marco Paiva, from Companhia Terra Amarela, with the aim of bringing together artists and structures from the Algarve region. The idea is to establish bridges that allow for the consolidation of accessibility practices and cultural and artistic diversity. It starts at 10am and runs throughout the day, at Palácio Gama Lobo.

On April 28th, the show “Requiem_A Única Censura que Deveria Existir é Censurar a Censura” will take place on April XNUMXth, by Dança em Diálogos.

The piece is based on the work “Requiem”, by Lopes-Graça, and unpublished texts by Cláudia Lucas Chéu, Ondjaki and Elmano Sancho. «Bodies, movements, images and narrative sections that reflect memories crossed in time and in the experiences of the past that find echoes in the present and the future are seen.»

There are sessions at 17pm, on Sunday, for the general public, with the Audio Description feature, for blind people and/or people with low vision. The following day, 00th, World Dance Day, there will be a session for schools, aimed at 29th grade and secondary school students, with free entry.

Closing the month, on the 30th, International Jazz Day is celebrated, with a concert at the Solar da Música Nova Auditorium, at 21pm, in partnership with MdC Records, from Mákina de Cena.

«MdC bets on Gonçalo Neto, guitarist and composer from Albufeira, who was part of the quartet of Maria João and Carlos Bica, presenting the new album “Little Dinosaur”. The album walks through several musical worlds, rock, jazz and country/folk, which are the composer's dearest", describes the municipality.

The project was formed in 2020 by Neto, during his three-year stay in Amsterdam. The band is made up of Gonçalo Neto (guitar and composition), Mauro Cottone (double bass), João Guerra (drums), José Soares (alto saxophone) and Nicolò Ricci (tenor saxophone).
