Portimão hosts athletics, handball, kayak polo, skateboarding and fishing events in April

One of this month's emblematic races in Portimão is the Freedom Race

Athletics, handball, kayak polo, skateboarding, underwater fishing and motorized sports are some of the modalities highlighted during April in the municipality of Portimão, hosting several national competitions.

The program begins with the 2nd National Optimist Qualification race, scheduled for the period between the 4th and 7th of April, with eight dozen sailors from all clubs in the country expected to participate in this competition, jointly organized by the Clube Naval de Portimão, Portuguese Sailing Federation, Southern Regional Sailing Association and Portuguese Association of the Optimist International Class.

On the 6th and 7th, Praia da Rocha hosts the National Mixed Ultimate Championship, promoted by the Portuguese Ultimate and Disc Sports Association, which will involve close to 150 players from clubs across the country.

On the same dates, the Spring Beach Tennis Tournament will take place in the Praia da Rocha Sports Area, which is national in nature and is part of the Portuguese Tennis Federation calendar.

The riverside area of ​​Portimão will be the natural setting for the official stage of the LPS Pro Skate League, which will take place from the 12th to the 14th of April and is part of the development program of the professional sport and the registration of the Portugal Cycle for Olympic Development 2021-2024 .

The best Portuguese skaters will be present in the men's and women's divisions, counting the classification for the national open ranking and respective qualification of the Pro Skate League 2024 champion.

On the 13th and 14th, the third edition of the Arade Clássico takes place, which will combine surfing, art and music in Praia da Rocha, organized by Portimão Surf Clube and directed by surfer/photographer/artist João Bracourt.

The meeting will take place at the Praia da Rocha Sports Area and the 'surfing' will take place at the 'pico do molhe', where participants will glide on the waves with classic boards longboard e fish.

After the presence of big international names, such as Ambre Victoire and Saxon Wilson, this year's event is dedicated to national talent, with the plastic arts represented by interventions on the wall of the Praia da Rocha jetty, a photographic exhibition by João Bracourt in honor of the surfer from Porto 'Zé dos Cães', lectures, sculptures by 'Mestre Toino' and paintings by Mariana Canelas.

The musical aspect will take place in the Marina de Portimão square from 16pm until 00pm, featuring national and international bands of various styles, such as the Palmers das Caldas da Rainha, the Australian Alby and emblematic DJs, such as Luca Guichard, Djuzen and Groundswell.

Another attraction will be the presence of hand shaper local Tonho, who will be doing live classic boards, as well as skateboarding demonstrations and a 'Blue Classics' classic car display. There will also be a small market, with tattoos by André Lang, barber Yuri, vintage clothing, food and drinks, etc.

The Arade Clássico is still part of March Jovem 2024 and has the institutional support of the Portimão City Council, the Portimão Parish Council and the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth.

The National Kayak Polo II Championship was also scheduled for the weekend of the 13th and 14th, a competition included in the calendar of the Portuguese Canoeing Federation, with local organization by the Clube Naval de Portimão, while on Sunday, the 14th, the petanque field dos Montes de Alvor will host a regional tournament, organized by the local club.

Another of the month's sporting highlights will be the Rali Cidade de Portimão, a race on the regional calendar that will take place on the 20th and 21st, organized by the Clube Automóvel do Sul and endorsed by the Portuguese Automobile and Karting Federation.

The dates of 20, 21, 25, 27 and 28 April were chosen for the Little Champions League, a training football meeting taking place at the Mexilhoeira Grande Sports Complex and aimed at recreational teams aged between 5 and 9 years (under-7, under-8, under-9), organized by Mexilhoeira Grande Futebol Clube and supported by Grupo Desportivo e Recreativo Alvorense and Portimonense Sporting Clube.

One of this month's emblematic races in Portimão is the Freedom Race, which will once again run along the city's riverside area on the 25th of April, organized by the Algarve Athletics Association and Portimão City Council.

The 27th of April will be marked by three relevant sporting events, with emphasis on the basketball match between the senior teams of Portimonense and Benfica, scheduled for 15pm at the Pavilhão Desportivo da Boavista and counting for the Betclic League, opposing the local formation, recently promoted to the top level, one of the main candidates for the national title.

Throughout the day, several Portuguese and foreign teams will decide the Handball Masters M50 Tournament, a competition aimed at veterans that will take place at the Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo de Portimão and the Pavilhão da Escola Manuel Teixeira Gomes

In turn, and also on the 27th of April, around one hundred and a half athletes from Algarve teams will compete in the Mar Sul Regional Canoeing Championship, organized by the Clube Naval de Portimão.

April 27th and 28th are the dates of the National Spearfishing Championship, another event organized by the Clube Naval de Portimão, which will bring together around 120 athletes from various teams across the country, forming part of the Portuguese Spearfishing Federation calendar.

Finally, Active Sundays continue on the 28th at the Alvor Sports Complex and include activities included in the Portimão Municipality's sports program for everyone open to the community, which on this date offers open fitness and dance classes.

As a preview, May will continue the suggestive sports program that Portimão City Council has prepared for this year, in which the city marks its first centenary, with particular emphasis on the Portimão International Rhythmic Gymnastics Tournament (from the 3rd to the 5th), the Portimão Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup (from 10 to 12), both scheduled for Portimão Arena, and the Portimão Box Cup (from 24 to 26 at Portimão Arena).
