European socialist politicians debate the future of housing in Portimão

Conference “Housing for all: Progressive cities and regions build the future of housing policy” takes place on the 4th and 5th of April

The Group of the European Socialist Party (PSE) will debate “Housing for all: Progressive cities and regions build the future of housing policy”, which takes place at the Portimão Museum, on the 4th and 5th of April.

One of the notable appearances is that of Nicolas Schmit, recently elected candidate of the European Union (EU) socialists for the presidency of the European Commission in the next legislature and the current European Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights.

One of the highlights will be the opening session, scheduled for 19pm on the 00th, which will feature the participation of Christophe Rouillon, president of the PES Group, and a panel composed of Enric López Jurado, president of the Young European Socialists, Isabel Carvalhais, Member of the European Parliament, Pedro Nuno Santos, General Secretary of the Socialist Party of Portugal and Nicolas Schmit, moderated by host Isilda Gomes.

This session, with the theme “Young people & Europe: Knock the Vote for European Progress”, will be freely accessible to citizens.

Nicholas Schmit states, regarding the motto that marks this two-day conference, that «more than 160 million Europeans spend almost half of their income on housing, and many more do not have the financial means to keep their homes adequately air-conditioned».

«This is a reality that affects young people, the elderly, single-parent families and the most socially vulnerable people with greater incidence», says the European representative, adding that «it is essential to invest more in affordable housing and social housing in Europe".

Due to the relevance of this topic in the current social context, the representative reveals «particular expectations» for the «dialogue with citizens in Portimão», where «pressing European challenges for young people will be discussed, such as the crisis
housing”.

«From combating excessive short-term rentals, to programs that financially support vulnerable citizens to renovate their homes», the Group of the European Socialist Party intends to listen to the population and the main concerns they have to guarantee answers in a way that everyone « can afford decent housing", he adds, inviting participation in this event.

Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão, who will be the host of this international initiative and moderator of the opening panel, highlights that «in the year that marks 50 years of democracy in Portugal and the centenary of its elevation to the city, Portimão will host a very important, very current debate, bringing together a group of experts and politicians, sharing visions and solutions of a European political line, which aims to launch reflection on the future, while preparing the present».

Sustainability, justice and access to decent homes will be the issues that the organization intends to delve into on April 5th, throughout the day, through the participation of several guest speakers.

To participate, prior registration is required. The program can be consulted here
