Fortaleza de Sagres celebrates International Day of Monuments and Sites with seminar

The initiative is aimed at teachers and technicians in the areas of culture, education and tourism from local authorities and other entities

The Sagres Fortress will celebrate, on April 18th, the International Day of Monuments and Sites (DIMS) with the seminar “Education for Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism”.

The initiative is aimed at teachers and technicians in the areas of culture, education and tourism in local authorities and other entities.

The seminar will feature the participation of Alexandra Rodrigues Gonçalves, Assistant Professor at the University of Algarve, director of the Higher School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism and former Regional Director of Culture of the Algarve, Pedro Gago, senior technician at the CCDR Culture Unit Algarve, and Ana Sousa, senior technician from the Sagres Fortress.

This year's DIMS has as its guiding theme “Catastrophes and conflicts in the light of the Venice charter”.

The International Charter for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments or Venice Charter celebrates 60 years in 2024, but continues to reveal its contemporary nature and to be one of the structuring documents in the conservation of heritage and historical monuments. This seminar will also reflect on the value of return, so often forgotten, that which leads to the appropriation of heritage by the community, guaranteeing its safeguarding and legacy to future generations.

Topics such as the expansion of the notion of cultural heritage, “new heritage”, rural architecture, landscape architecture, historic gardens, industrial heritage, intangible heritage will also be discussed here, as well as current issues posed to communities in the selection of assets and preservation or definition of new heritage management models.

It is also proposed to reflect on the connection between cultural heritage and education and create the opportunity for schools and groups to establish dialogues between heritage and the environment (climate change, sustainability and impact of cultural activities).

In line with this perspective, the Fortaleza Educativa Program will be presented by the Fortaleza Educational and Cultural Mediation Service, in an approach that emphasizes questioning, experimentation, creativity and the search for innovative solutions, with the sustained use of digital tools, which An example is the online launch of the Fortaleza Educativa Program in the format flipbook.

Registration runs until April 15th here

This initiative is organized by Fortaleza de Sagres, in partnership with the Rui Grácio Training Center (Lagos) and has the support of the University of Algarve and CCDR Algarve – Culture Unit.
